They have large, water-storing rhizomes and shiny leaves divided into pairs of leaflets. The smooth, shiny leaves (40-60 cm long) arise directly from the ground, and have six to eight pairs of leaflets. It is native to warm, dry grasslands and can thus tolerate relatively dry soils. The thick leaflets may fall to the ground and form small bulblets.

- It’s tolerant of neglect.
- No pruning is needed but remove faded leaves and flowers at soil level.
- Its leaves and fruits are poisonous. All parts are irritant to the mouth and esophagus.
