Get To Know Your Plant

Gasteria is recognisable from its thick, hard ‘tongue-shaped’ leaves. The plant bears stomach-shaped flowers and derives its name from the Latin word ‘gaster’ which means ‘stomach’. Other commonly used names include ‘ox-tongue’, ‘cow-tongue’, ‘lawyer's tongue’ and, occasionally,’ mother-in-law's tongue’!

Care Instructions

  • Apply a dilute, low on nitrogen fertiliser fortnightly during late spring and summer.
  • Make it stand outside in summer.
  • Germination usually occurs within eight days of potting but it may take as long as one month depending on the species.
